How to clean a washing machine

Washer odor usually comes from detergent and soil residue in spots a regular wash never reaches. This is the part-by-part routine from five manufacturers' own guides, with notes for Los Angeles renters and hard water.

The short answer

About once a month, or every 30 washes on Whirlpool and Maytag models, run the washer's cleaning cycle empty with the cleaner your manual names. Then clean the four spots that cycle misses: the dispenser drawer, the door gasket, the drain pump filter on a front-loader, and the outside. Skip vinegar in the drum unless your manual allows it.

The part map: five spots to clean

A cleaning cycle handles the drum. The other four spots need a cloth, a brush, or a few minutes on the floor. Work through them in this order once a month.

  1. Dispenser drawer

    Front-load and top-load models with a drawer

Pull the drawer out until it stops, or lift it free if your model allows. Soak a removable drawer in hot water with a little mild detergent, rinse it, and dry it with a towel before it goes back. Wipe a fixed drawer in place with a damp cloth.

Many dispensers are not dishwasher safe. Check the manual before you load one.

  2. Drum or tub

    Every washer

Empty the drum, add the cleaner your manual names, and run the cleaning cycle. Brands call it Clean Washer, Self Clean, Tub Clean, or Basket Clean. With no cleaning cycle, Whirlpool says a normal hot-water or sanitize cycle can work. Leave the door open afterward so the drum dries.

Samsung says its front-load Self Clean takes about four hours and its top-load cycle about one. Maytag suggests a rinse and spin after cleaning a top-loader.

  3. Door gasket

    Front-load only

Pull back the rubber lip and wipe the whole fold with a damp cloth, checking for socks, coins, and hair as you go. For stains or buildup, Whirlpool's care guide mixes 3/4 cup of liquid chlorine bleach into 1 gallon of warm water. Wipe the seal, wait 5 minutes, then wipe it dry. Wear rubber gloves.

Confirm bleach is allowed for your model before you use the dilute bleach step.

  4. Drain pump filter

    Front-load only

Unplug the washer. Open the small panel near the bottom, set a towel and a shallow pan underneath, and drain the short hose. Twist the filter counterclockwise to remove it, brush it under warm water, clean the opening, and twist it back in until it stops.

Samsung says to do this monthly or about every 40 washes, and to wait an hour after a hot cycle. LG says not to wash the filter in the dishwasher. Samsung's top-load washers have no pump filter.

  5. Lid, agitator, and outside

    Every washer

Wipe the cabinet, controls, and door or lid with a damp cloth and mild soap. On a top-loader, wipe the inside of the lid too. If the agitator has a removable cap, clean beneath it, but do not force a cap that resists.

Whirlpool says vinegar is fine for the outside of the machine, even though it advises against putting it in the drum.

How often, by the manual

Every brand we checked lands on roughly once a month. Here is how each one says it.

Whirlpool and Maytag
30washes
Clean the washer every 30 cycles or once a month, whichever comes first.
Samsung front-load
40washes
The Self Clean reminder lights after 40 washes, or 20 on a top-loader. Run it at least monthly if you wash less.
GE top-load
1cup a month
Run Basket Clean once a month with 1 cup of liquid bleach.
LG
3weeks
Already smells musty? Run Tub Clean once a week for 3 weeks in a row, then go back to monthly.

What goes in the drum

The cleaning cycle is only as safe as what you add to it. Brands disagree on bleach and vinegar, which is why your own manual settles it.

Liquid chlorine bleachCheck your manualGE uses 1 cup in its monthly Basket Clean, and Samsung suggests it when a mold smell is already there. Whirlpool and Maytag say it is not compatible with every washer, including some front-load models.
White vinegarCheck your manualWhirlpool and Maytag say not to pour it in the drum, because its acidity can weaken rubber seals and hoses over time. GE lists vinegar as one option for its top-load Basket Clean. Your manual decides.

Habits that keep the smell away

  1. Measure HE detergent

Use high-efficiency detergent and never more than the recommended amount. Whirlpool's care guide puts this first on its odor prevention list.

  2. Run warm sometimes

Whirlpool says occasional warm or hot washes control residue better than cold water alone.

  3. Leave the door ajar

Keep a front-loader's door slightly open between loads. LG adds opening the dispenser drawer after a Tub Clean so it can dry.

  4. Dry the seal

Maytag suggests checking a front-load door seal for moisture and residue after every load and wiping it dry.

  5. Check the hoses

Look for bulging, cracking, or fraying on the hoses at least every five years, per Maytag.

When it's not a cleaning problem

  • The smell is still there after a full clean. Whirlpool suggests booking a service visit.
  • LG: a musty smell that lasts through three weekly Tub Cleans calls for a repair request.
  • The drain hose is split, cracked, or damaged when you check it during the filter clean.
  • It leaks or will not drain even with a clean pump filter. Use your manual's troubleshooting section or call a technician.

Notes for Los Angeles homes

Three things that change how this routine plays out in LA apartments and houses.

36%

Renting? Clean it, but check the lease for repairs

Census figures put the owner-occupied rate in the city of Los Angeles at 36% for 2020 to 2024, so most households rent. The California Department of Real Estate treats a washer as an amenity, and the rental agreement usually decides who repairs it. Routine cleaning is yours. A leak, a cracked hose, or a pump that won't drain goes to whoever the lease names.

16.3

Hard water across most of the city

LADWP reports average hardness from 8.6 grains per gallon in the Valley and Western LA up to 16.3 in Eastern LA and the Harbor. White residue on the door glass or drawer may be minerals or undissolved detergent. Wipe it off during the monthly clean, and don't switch to vinegar in the drum unless your manual allows it. For faucets and glass, see how to remove hard water stains.

Want the laundry room on your cleaning list?

La La Land Cleaning connects Los Angeles homes with insured, independent cleaners. Laundry is an add-on, and you can ask for the laundry area or the outside of your washer when you request a quote. Quotes depend on your home's size, condition, and the add-ons you pick. We don't repair appliances.

Washing machine cleaning questions

How often should you clean a washing machine?

Whirlpool and Maytag say every 30 washes or once a month, whichever comes first. Samsung's Self Clean reminder lights after 40 washes on a front-loader and 20 on a top-loader, and GE and LG both recommend a monthly cleaning cycle. If you wash less often, clean it monthly anyway.

Can you clean a washing machine with vinegar?

Only if your manual allows it. Whirlpool and Maytag advise against vinegar in the drum because its acidity can damage rubber seals and hoses over time, though Whirlpool says it is fine on the outside of the machine. GE lists vinegar as one option for its top-load Basket Clean. Never mix vinegar with bleach.

Can I use bleach to clean my washer?

Many models allow it. GE uses 1 cup of liquid bleach in its monthly Basket Clean, Samsung suggests bleach for an existing mold smell, and Whirlpool's guide uses dilute bleach on the door seal. Whirlpool and Maytag also note that bleach is not compatible with every washer, so check your manual first.

How do I clean a front-load washer that smells?

Run the cleaning cycle empty with an approved cleaner, wipe inside the folds of the door gasket, clean the dispenser drawer, and clean the drain pump filter. Then leave the door open to dry. LG suggests a Tub Clean once a week for three weeks when a musty smell is already present.

How do I clean a top-load washer without a cleaning cycle?

Whirlpool says a normal cycle on the hot-water setting, or a sanitize cycle, can work. Add a washing machine cleaner and follow its package directions, as Samsung recommends for models without Self Clean. Maytag suggests a rinse and spin afterward, then wipe the lid and leave it open to dry.

Do I need to clean the drain pump filter?

On a front-loader, yes. Samsung recommends cleaning it at least monthly or about every 40 washes, and LG lists it in its regular cleaning routine. Unplug the washer, drain the short hose into a shallow pan, then twist the filter out and brush it under warm water. Samsung's top-load washers do not have one.

Will a house cleaner clean my washing machine?

Washer maintenance is not part of a standard cleaning visit. If you want the laundry area or the washer's outside wiped, ask when you request a quote with La La Land Cleaning and it will be confirmed in your scope. Laundry can also be added to a visit. Drain filters, hoses, and repairs stay with you, your landlord, or a technician.
