How to clean light fixtures
For Los Angeles homes. Disconnect power as the fixture's manual directs, let the light cool, and remove loose dust gently from safely reachable exterior surfaces. Use a soft dry cloth unless the manufacturer permits another method. Clean removable glass only as instructed, keep liquid away from sockets and wiring, and let cleaned parts dry completely before reassembly and restoring power.

Match the care to the finish
The model's instructions come first. A recommendation for plain glass does not automatically apply to antiqued glass, a lacquered fitting, or an LED housing.
Why there is no universal wash
Westinghouse permits mild soap on glass for model 6640200. Visual Comfort's UK FAQ specifies dry-only care for its products. Both can be correct for the products they describe.
Read the manufacturer sourcesOnly if the instructions for that exact shade allow it. The Westinghouse 6640200 manual permits mild soap on its glass, while Visual Comfort's UK care FAQ calls for dry cleaning and gives mercury glass a separate feather-duster rule. For a washable shade, disconnect power, let it cool, remove it only as the manual directs, clean it away from the electrical fixture, and dry it completely before refitting. Never immerse an assembled light or assume frosted, painted, or antiqued glass is washable.
Identify the finish before using polish. Solid brass, lacquered brass, plating, and a deliberately aged finish are not interchangeable. Start with a soft dry cloth and follow the manufacturer's finish-specific guidance. Visual Comfort warns that brass polish can remove existing patina; its Soft Brass and Soft Silver finishes should be cleaned with a soft dry cloth only. Do not scrub an aged finish to make it look new or borrow a polish recommendation from a different fixture.
Find the brand, model, and care instructions before attempting stain removal. On ordinary accessible exterior surfaces, gentle dry dusting is a conservative starting point, but an unknown fragile finish may need manufacturer advice first. Avoid abrasive pads, powders, and strong degreasers. Westinghouse warns that chemical-cleaner spray can discolor its fixture finish. Stop if color transfers to the cloth, the coating flakes, or the surface changes.
Do not treat every decorative surface like plain window glass. Visual Comfort's UK FAQ specifies a feather duster for mercury glass because cloth wiping or solvents may remove the antiquing. Crystal assemblies, beads, and fragile ornaments need their own care and handling instructions. Do not twist a chandelier, pull on hanging parts, or begin piece-by-piece removal without an appropriate specialist plan.
Keep liquid away from LED modules, drivers, sockets, and wiring. Commercial Electric's manual for model 56574141 requires power disconnection before cleaning, a soft dry cloth, and no liquid cleaner on the LEDs, driver, or internal wiring. That is a model-specific example, not permission to open another light. Follow your light's own instructions and leave sealed housings, electrical components, and faults to qualified maintenance.
Keep cleaning separate from maintenance
The cleaning product is only one part of the decision. A cool, disconnected lamp on a console is a different job from a ceiling pendant above a stairwell.
- Disconnect before care
- Unplug a portable lamp. For an installed light, follow its manual's power-isolation instructions; switching it off at the wall is not a substitute when the instructions require breaker or fuse disconnection. Let bulbs and parts cool. Do not open wiring compartments or spray into sockets.
- Keep your footing stable
- Do not stand on a chair, counter, or a ladder's top step. A suitable stepladder needs stable, level placement and locked spreaders. Do not lean beyond the rails or work over stairs. If safe placement and reach are not possible, leave the task for appropriate help.
- Know when dusting ends
- Loose fittings, cracks, exposed wiring, scorching, or persistent flickering are maintenance issues, not stains to clean away. Stop using a damaged light and arrange qualified maintenance. Fragile chandelier disassembly and unusually high fixtures need a separate plan, not an improvised household clean.

Never spray the assembled fixture. When a shade is approved for wet cleaning, clean it separately and let it dry completely before refitting.
An LA condo needs an access plan, too
In a Downtown LA condo or rental, ask the owner or building manager for the installed fixture's model and care instructions. Check who handles maintenance before removing any parts. Your private kitchen pendant and a shared lobby chandelier are different jobs.
If your building uses front-desk check-in or scheduled elevator access, share those arrangements before the visit. Send a photo that shows the whole fixture and its height, not only the dust. Mention stairs, fixed furniture, and any finish that needs a particular care method.
Plan an apartment-cleaning visitConfirm the task, not just the room
La La Land Cleaning is an insured referral agency connecting Los Angeles clients with independent cleaning professionals. Confirm reachable fixture dusting in the written scope before booking.
Glass removal, polishing, delicate chandelier handling, high-reach work, and electrical servicing are not automatic inclusions. A request may need a specialist instead of a house cleaner. Interior glass and window cleaning are add-ons, not part of every standard or deep-cleaning visit.
Quotes depend on home size, condition, service depth, and selected add-ons. Ask about suitability before treating a special request as booked.

Power, finish, and access instructions apply even when the task looks like a quick wipe.
Can I clean light fixtures without taking them down?
Often, accessible exterior dust can be removed without taking the fixture down. Disconnect power as its manual directs, let it cool, and use the approved dry method with light pressure. This does not necessarily clean the inside of an enclosed globe. If accessing that area requires disassembly, safe support, or uncertain electrical work, stop and ask the manufacturer or an appropriate professional.
Can I spray glass cleaner directly on a light fixture?
No. Keep spray and liquid away from sockets, wiring, and electrical parts. A cleaner that is suitable for ordinary windows may damage a fixture's finish or decorative glass. Use only the method approved for the exact fixture; wash an approved removable shade separately rather than wetting the assembled light.
Is vinegar safe for cleaning light fixtures?
Do not assume it is. Visual Comfort's UK care FAQ explicitly excludes vinegar cleaners for its products. Other models have different care instructions. Check the exact glass and metal finish before using any cleaner, and keep all liquid away from electrical parts.
How do I clean greasy kitchen pendant lights?
Disconnect power, let the light cool, and gently remove loose dust first. Check whether the manufacturer permits a damp cloth or a mild cleaning solution for the exact surface. Dry-only finishes should not be treated with a general kitchen degreaser. If the glass shade is washable and safely removable under its instructions, clean it separately and dry it completely before refitting.
How often should light fixtures be cleaned?
Check for visible dust during your normal room-cleaning routine and plan care before buildup becomes heavy. Kitchen residue and delicate finishes may call for different methods, not simply more frequent scrubbing. Follow the fixture's care instructions instead of using one fixed interval for every room and material.
Is light-fixture cleaning included in an LA house-cleaning visit?
Confirm the specific task before booking. Reachable fixture dusting appears in La La Land Cleaning's residential service scope, but glass removal, polishing, high-reach work, and electrical servicing are not automatic inclusions. The insured referral agency connects Los Angeles clients with independent cleaning professionals. Share photos, height, finish, access, and the requested work so suitability and the written scope can be confirmed.
